CAC Wins State's Highest Honor
The Cambridge Arts Council was recently named as a recipient
of the 2003 Commonwealth Award. One of six awards made statewide,
CAC was designated as the state's leading "Community
Organization" for its significant work in integrating
the arts and humanities into the Cambridge community. The
Commonwealth Award is given every two years to individual
artists, humanists and cultural organizations for "outstanding
contributions in the advancement of excellence, access, education
or diversity in the arts, humanities or interpretive sciences".
Recipients are identified through a statewide nomination process
and chosen by a committee of arts and business leaders.
The six 2003 recipients were drawn from a pool of 150 nominations
and awards were made in five categories. The Commonwealth
Awards were presented at a luncheon ceremony on March 25,
2003 at the Sheraton Framingham as part of the Massachusetts
Cultural Council's Arts in the Balance conference. The Commonwealth
Awards and luncheon were sponsored by FleetBoston Financial.
