Something Special at the Cambridge River Festival

Please see below for special activities planned for the 25th Annual Cambridge River Festival!

Geodesic Sculptures
Seventh and 8th grade students from the Tobin, Morse and Baldwin Public Schools in Cambridge will construct giant Geodesic Domes on the festival site. Over the past year, students have been learning the architectural and industrial aspects of design and how they relate to art. The students will put this knowledge to the test by working in teams to create humongous structures nearly eight feet in height, assembled out of paper and triangles the students have prepared prior to the festival. The resulting structures will be complex networks of triangles that form a roughly spherical surface to demonstrate "energetic-synergetic geometry".

Puppy Love
The Animal Rescue League and New England Veterinary Behavior Associates have joined hands in The Partners for Life Dog Training Program, an on-site agility class for dogs of all ages and abilities. Puppy Agility and Puppy Kindergarten will be offered for the youngsters, along with classes in Good Manners, Agility and Off-leash Obedience for mature dogs. So bring your furry friends (and dogs) down to the festival's Close Encounters of the Canine Kind to watch some agility pros, then try a class with your own dog. Also, at 3:00pm, the fabulous owner/dog look-alike contest will be judged by the Cambridge Animal Commission.

Street Parade
In keeping with the free-spirited fun of the first River Festival in 1977, a street parade will kick off this year's festival. Artists, performers, community groups, fun-loving Cantabrigians and more will come together in a roving procession that will swing, sing and swell through the streets of Cambridge. Thanks to Forest City Boston, this year's parade will be launched from University Park at SIdney Street and Massachusetts Avenue at 11:15am, ending up on Memorial Drive at 12 Noon. All are welcome.

SplashDance
We've rounded up boats of all shapes and sizes to perform SplashDance, a performance art event on the Charles River. Canoes, kayaks and more will form a chevron beneath the Lars Anderson Footbridge where the festival is taking place, then proceed to the Weeks Footbridge before turning to face the Cambridge Shore. At 2pm, a drumming call-and-response between boats and on-shore drummers will commence, turning into an all-out drum jam open to everyone. People are encouraged to bring homemade percussion instruments to add their voice to the groovy beat.

Art Attacks
To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the River Festival, the Cambridge Arts Council staff has been hosting Art Attacks in public spaces around Cambridge, encouraging the community to help decorate rolling canoes that will be pulled behind bicycles in the street parade. The canoes serve as a canvas to capture thoughts, ideas, images and Reflect-ions. We've already "attacked" four times, don't miss the last one this Wednesday, June 11th. At 4:00pm, we'll join the Heart and Soul Appreciation Day For Health and Human Services Providers at Dante Alighieri, 41 Hampshire Street, Cambridge.
