ART AMONG US - Make it Public
Art Among Us - Make It Public is an apprenticeship program
that brings together high school youth under the guidance
of a professional muralist and teacher to learn about the
issues and history of creating art for public places. Working
twenty hours each week for six weeks in July and August, the
participants tour the public art collection of the City, meet
with a conservator and several professional artists who have
done work in Cambridge, learn about the tradition, the materials
and the maintenance of public art and mural painting, participate
in the process of developing and presenting proposals to the
community and City agencies, and, finally, design and paint
murals on utility boxes, which are located in parks and on
sidewalks throughout the City.
2004 is the third year that Art Among Us has taken place.
Utility boxes in Central Square, Technology Square, Donnelly
Field in East Cambridge, and North Cambridge were given designs
created by youth, employed through the 2004 Mayor's Summer
Youth Employment Program, under the supervision and mentorship
of muralist Dawn Scaltreto. Participants gained knowledge
about the public art process and about different neighborhoods
and designed murals in response to what they learned.
Art Among Us is a collaboration of the Cambridge Arts Council,
the Department of Public Works, and the Mayor's Summer Youth
Employment Program (Summer Work and Learning Grant). For the
third year in a row, Dickson Brothers Hardware in Harvard
Square generously donated paint and supplies to the program.
