Commissioned by the Cambridge Arts Council, artist Nancy Selvage completed in 2007 Water Wall, a permanent public artwork for a new park at Trolley Square in North Cambridge.
Trolley Square, located at the corner of Massachusetts and Cameron Avenues, is named for the former Trolley barns that served the original MBTA street car system for the City in the early 1900s. The City of Cambridge, in collaboration with neighborhood residents, designed a 3600-square-foot park that connects with the existing Linear Park along the Minuteman bike path, and includes new trees, flowerbeds, benches, a rose garden, landscaped paths, lighting, and bicycle racks.
Working with landscape designer Rob Steck, artist Nancy Selvage created a curvilinear sculptural wall that frames and enhances a circular gathering place within the new park near the busy intersection. Using layers of perforated steel to evoke waves and the play of light, Water Wall provides a prominent visual element for the active street corner, animating the streetscape on one side while also sheltering a circular seating alcove on the other.
Nancy Selvage works in response to the character and context of an actual or imagined site, with the goal of enhancing awareness, transforming experience, and discovering visual, spatial, and kineasthetic means of expression. She uses a variety of media to create sculpture for exhibitions, installations, collaborative performances, and public commissions. Her installations have been recognized and supported by various grants and awards including a Massachusetts Artists Foundation Sculpture Fellowship and two Massachusetts Arts Council New Works Commissions.
The CAC Gallery exhibited Nancy Selvages's constructions (Nov. 2007-Feb. 2008) in conjunction with this public art project.
